I have a love-hate relationship with this parable. I love that whenever we show up to God, we don’t get what’s left over. There’s always a place whenever we show up to God. The parable also tells me that while, “Yes, I have been a pastor for over 50 years, I don’t have a higher status before God than the part time local pastor just starting out.” Years of service are not as important to God as they are to us. It doesn’t mean that they didn’t mean anything. It mean’s that God sees things a lot differently than we do. I don’t see this parable as a promotion of some sort of socialism. I don’t think it is about us as much as we think. I believe it is about God-God’s grace, unmerited love, and God’s generosity. Perhaps the parable is for employers and their obligation to provide a living wage. Those who worked all day, received a full days pay and were able to feed their families. Those who were hired last also get a full days pay and went home and were able to feed their families.

That’s the responsibility of employers serving God. God truly is L
